Virginia E. Chrismer, – better known as Betty – or lovingly called Bugga by her grandchildren, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2017, surrounded by her loving family at Ebeid Hospice Residence. Born February 2, 1922, in Alliance, OH, she was the daughter of Waldo and Edna (Ickes) Sheets. She attended Ashland College before marrying Frank Chrismer on July 25, 1946. In her early years Virginia worked at the TWA Airlines radio room in Dayton, OH. While living in Lambertville, MI, Virginia was a secretary for Bedford Public Schools where she worked at Douglas Road Elementary, Central Elementary, and retired from Smith Road Elementary in 1987.
Since her husband’s passing in 1998, Virginia has been the loving matriarch of the family, and also kept her adventurous spirit. She loved her junkets with “the Gambling Grannies,” relished eating onions rings and coconut shrimp, played a mean game of golf, and even braved the perils of flying to Florida at age 93 to avoid winter weather. Besides getting a hole-in-one at 85 at Giant Oak Golf Course in Temperance, Virginia got the opportunity to fly a plane at the age of 87 when treating her grandson to his first plane ride..and said “yes.” A generous soul, she was an incredible woman who knew her own mind and followed it. Everyone thought her “spunky.”
She is survived by her loving children, Dianne (Jay Barrett) Chrismer, Jeanne (Robert) Hamman, Douglas (Diane) Chrismer, and Jerry (Jacki) Chrismer; 3 grandchildren, Christine Hamman, Lauren and Alex Chrismer; 2 step grandchildren, Samantha (Ryan) Colburn, and Martin Barrett; 3 step great-grandchildren, Emily and Andrew Colburn, and Landon Barrett. Virginia was preceded in death by her brother, Allen Sheets and sisters, Phyllis Jean Sheets and Pauline Stauffer.
Visitation will be from 10:00am – 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Rd., Temperance, MI. A memorial service will follow at Ottawa Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Ebeid Hospice Residence, 5340 Harroun Rd., Sylvania, OH 43650.
